Introduction

The Limes is situated on the corner of Spa Road, a leafy residential area tucked just far enough away from the bustle of Gloucester to remain calm and pleasant, yet still within easy walking distance of the city centre and quays. This semi-detached property’s lofty Victorian exterior instantly captures the imagination, with its sash bay windows and unique turret-style roofing. The house was built in the late 19th Century for a man who needed access to the dockyard to ship in slate for the construction of fireplaces. When the Bentleys purchased The Limes in August 1995, it was being used as a Bed & Breakfast – hence a washbasin in every bedroom except Bedroom Six, a more recent renovation. For almost 20 years this was the family home of John and Joy Bentley and their 4 children, and the love and memories expressed through the details of the interior stand testament.

Enter through the back gates into the driveway, and you will be greeted by The Limes’ courtyard garden. Guests can park up to two cars in the driveway, with an additional space in the detached garage, which can also be used for storage. The courtyard is a delightful compact space with outdoor dining facilities, gas fired barbecue and pergola-covered hot tub. Guests staying in the warmer months will be able to appreciate the courtyard in full foliage bloom.

Inside, the house is a period property lovers haven. High ceilings, sweeping sash windows and open fires, brought up to date with superfast broadband, 55” Smart TV and a plethora of kitchen gadgets. Spacious and light, The Limes’ quirky Victorian décor and furniture is the result of many years of careful curation by the Bentleys – the house is a museum for one-off finds and vintage treasures. The result: a much-cherished and characterful property with plenty of home comforts.

Just a 5-10 minute walk from the front door and you’ll find yourself in the centre of Gloucester or the historic dockyard. Commonly overlooked, there’s plenty to see and do in Gloucester, as well as being a great base to explore other areas of the Cotswolds from. For rugby fans. Kingsholm Stadium, home to Gloucester Rugby is only a 20 minute walk away and breath-taking Gloucester Cathedral is even closer. Visit the recently developed designer shopping outlet at the quays for a touch of retail therapy or enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants around the understatedly beautiful docks.

    The first room you will enter when you arrive at The Limes is the large entrance porch. Filled with coat hooks and walking sticks, this is the perfect place to leave your boots before heading into this charming Victorian house.

    The grand Entrance Hall is at the heart of this property. With its tessellated tiled floor, towering ceiling and wide sweeping mahogany staircase, this room is a true glimpse into a bygone era. Note the antique grandfather clock that stands proudly under the stairs – it is a family heirloom belonging to Joy. Take time to appreciate this room and browse the walls, you won’t find an entrance hall like this in a modern property!

    Kitchen

    A charming, well-appointed room, the Kitchen is a treasure trove of curiosities and facilities that are yours to admire, explore and use. Decorated in country creams and pastel shades, the kitchen houses an Aga in an alcove surrounded by hanging utensils, double Belfast sink, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, 4 slot toaster and De’Longhi coffee machine with a bag of beans located in the cupboard above. With a central breakfast table that seats 6, the kitchen is the perfect space to relax amongst the chintz crockery, baskets and ornamental kitchenware.

    Scullery

    If the facilities of the Kitchen aren’t enough, head down into the Scullery to discover more! In the Scullery you will find an additional sink, induction hob and electric cooker, slow cooker, microwave, washing machine and separate tumble dryer. There’s also a corner cupboard to the far right of the sink that contains plenty of outdoor-safe crockery and cups, perfect for if you’re planning to dine al-fresco or use the gas barbecue.

    Dining Room

    A cosy room with a hint of grandeur, the Dining Room at The Limes is the perfect room in which to enjoy a meal together seated in the ornately carved chairs around the 18th Century mahogany dining table. Offset against the deep crimson walls, you’ll find plenty of Victorian china sets surrounding the working gas fire – the perfect touch to make this room feel even homelier.

    Sitting Room

    Full-length sash windows make this a bright and airy room to sit and relax in. With its sumptuous swags and tails curtains, large open fire, LG Freeview TV and array of comfy furniture, the Sitting Room is a great space to unwind and absorb the old-fashioned charm of this property. If you’re musical, you’ll immediately notice one particularly delightful feature of the Sitting Room – a piano. The piano sits patiently waiting for guests to strike up a tune on its black and white keys – there’s even a couple of recorders if you fancy a harmony!

    Drawing Room

    Benefitting from the same airy brightness as its neighbouring Sitting Room, the Drawing Room provides the perfect space to curl up with a good book – and there’s plenty to choose from. Housed in a beautiful glass door fronted book case, The Limes’ private library is free for guests to explore and use – but please return any books you may have borrowed when you leave. If you’re feeling like putting pen to paper yourself, there’s two fantastic writing desks in the drawing room. Guests can choose between either the antique fold-top writing bureau or snug corner desk, both complete with lamps and comfortable chairs. Open the second drawer down of the white dresser next to the window and you’ll find a fantastic selection of greetings and note cards thoughtfully provided for guest use by Joy. One distinctly modern feature is the 55” OLED 4K LG smart TV with DVD Drive. Simply choose a DVD from the selection in the white cupboard and prepare for movie night in an atmospheric setting. Alternatively, there’s an outstanding selection of board games in the same cupboard – you’ll never be short of things to do at The Limes!

    Bedroom One

    A bright and airy room, Bedroom One sleeps two guests in a comfy king size bed. Decorated in soothing country cream, offset by the dark oak furniture, Bedroom One is a lovely room to relax and enjoy the Victorian feel of the house. Numerous chests of drawers and a built-in wardrobe means there there’s plenty of storage in this room – guests even benefit from their own washbasin, a true Victorian guesthouse feature.

    Bathroom

    The unusual azure blue tiled bathroom is bright and spacious. The bathroom has a toilet and a bath tub with overhead faucet shower for use of all guests staying on the first floor.

    Bedroom Two

    A delightful, cosy single bedroom with a delicate white and blue colour scheme, this room is perfect for younger guests – and they’ll still have their own washbasin! Again, there’s plenty of storage in this bedroom, including a unique understair hanging cupboard where extra duvets are stored.

    Bedroom Three

    A beautiful light room with a comfy king size double bed, Bedroom Three has plenty of eye-catching details that make it a great room to stay in. Delicate floral wall paper lines the walls of this charming bedroom, complete with upholstered carved bedstead, unusual writing bureau-style bed side tables and a modern bowl and mixer tap washbasin. There’s even a lovely little desk and seat in the corner, perfect for if you’re working whilst on the move!

    Back out into the hall and into…

    Bedroom Four

    The main feature of Bedroom Four is the beautifully carved wooden bedstead of the sumptuous king size bed. The head and foot boards were discovered in a junk shop by Joy many years ago, where sensing their potential, she purchased them and stripped off the white paint back to their beautiful original wooden state. They were then fitted professionally onto a base, and the unique bed that you will find today in Bedroom Four was created! There’s plenty of beautiful furniture in this room, from the bow shaped chest of drawers and ottoman at the end of the bed containing extra duvets, to the equally magnificent wardrobe which matches the bed. The room is also complete with its own washbasin and window-facing breakfast table and chairs.

    Upstairs – Second Floor

    Landing/Kitchenette

    The second-floor landing is equipped with a very handy Kitchenette – complete with kettle, microwave, fridge, sink, work surfaces, cupboards and mugs and spoons – perfect for a morning cup of tea if you don’t feel like venturing down to the kitchen just yet!

    If you’re looking for a way to keep little ones entertained, open the large cupboard under the window to the right and you’ll find a treasure trove of toys and games that’ll keep them occupied for hours!

    Bedroom Five

    A sweet little room complete with a single bed, small dressing table/desk with free standing mirror, wash basin and bedside table. Ideal for children, this bedroom is also home to a fixed crib and travel cot.

    Bedroom Six

    Welcome to the secret bedroom! Tucked away in the apex-shaped loft area of the house, hides Bedroom 6, a gloriously bright twin rooms with two beautiful cream wrought iron single beds. Benefitting from 4 skylight windows (don’t worry, there are black out blinds) Bedroom Six has a wonderful light feel, while also retaining a sense of secrecy. Featuring a charming little gingham covered table with two chairs and hat/coat stand, this is the only room in the house not to have its own washbasin, however the bathroom is next door.

    Bedroom Seven

    Last but not least, the final bedroom. A lovely beam-filled loft room with twin beds, this bedroom is bright and cosy with skylights and plenty of storage thanks to an antique white wardrobe. Bedroom Seven benefits from a spacious feeling thanks to the high beamed ceilings and is complete with its own washbasin.

    Outside

    To the rear of the property next to the garage, guests will find the lovely paved and enclosed garden area of The Limes. With a door from the Scullery leading into the garden and double patio doors from the Dining Room the outdoor area at The Limes is easily accessible. Guests have full use of the patio furniture and gas barbecue, perfect for al-fresco dining on a warm summer evening. Better still, guests can completely relax in the hot tub on the raised decking under the pergola – the ultimate holiday treat!

Gloucester, once a thriving industrial city, is home to many understated jewels of the South West. The Limes is centrally located to both the city centre and docks, meaning pretty much everything you could need during your stay in on your doorstep. There are Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s superstores all within a 5 – 10 minute drive of the property.  Asda is open 24/7, Tesco is open Mon-Sat: 6am-midnight, Sun: 10am – 4pm, and Sainsburys is open Mon-Fri: 7am – 11pm, Sat: 7am – 10pm, Sun: 11am – 5pm. A few minutes’ walk to the top of Spa Road and turn right onto Southgate Street and you will find a number of small convenience shops and mini-markets.

Gloucester city centre is divided by the main cross roads and four mains streets: Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate and Westgate. A bustling city centre, you will find all your usual high street shops and commodities as well as a handful of unique establishments such as Gloucester Antique Centre and the Beatrix Potter inspired House of The Tailor of Gloucester Museum and Shop. For retail therapy, be sure not to miss the fantastic Gloucester Quays Outlet centre. Featuring 56 brands including Calvin Klein, All Saints, Levi’s, Ted Baker, L.K. Bennet, Adidas and Fatface, with discounts up to 70% – it’s a real treat for those who love a bargain! Step outside of the outlet and you’re met with the recently renovated Gloucester docks. The Victorian warehouses make a spectacular backdrop to the array of restaurants, pubs, cafes and bars and Cineworld cinema complex. If you’re intrigued about this historical area, be sure to make a visit to the National Waterways Museum inside one of the warehouses.

If you are approaching The Limes from Bristol Road (A4301), continue straight ahead at the traffic lights next to Gloucester Quays Outlet. Continue past the outlet so that it is on your left. At the next roundabout, take the third exit onto Spa Road. Continue until the road bends to the left. The Limes is the house on the corner. The garage is accessed through the large wooden gates next to the tree if you continue around the corner onto Brunswick Road.

If you are approaching The Limes from Commercial Road (A4301), the docks and quays will be on your right-hand side. Look out for The Tall Ship pub on the corner on your right. Around 100 yards past the pub you will reach a small roundabout. Take the first exit onto Spa Road and follow the instructions above.

By Train

The closest train station to The Limes is Gloucester. Services run regularly to Gloucester from London Paddington (duration 2 hrs) and Birmingham (duration 1 hr). The Limes is a 15 minute walk from Gloucester station, 10 minutes by taxi, or 9 minutes on the 66 bus that runs every 10 minutes and drops you off at the top of Spa Road.

Parking

The Limes has private parking for 3 cars. There is additional free street parking available for up to 7 cars. Guests can unlock the back gates by entering the same code for the key safe, 9450, into the padlock. There is space for 1 car inside the garage (also unlocked by same key as front door) and 2 on the drive.

If you would like additional on street parking, please contact the owner prior to your stay, and let him know your car registration number and the dates for which you will require street parking.
